Sustainable trucking

Five factors to consider before transforming your fleet into fossil-free gas trucks

Focusing on sustainable trucking is a key element when pursuing sustainability in our supply chains.

It is not new knowledge that trucks can drive on fossil-free fuel and emit minimum CO2. In fact, many of the technologies such as biogas and electric vehicles have been known for years, and today, fully functional trucks using these alternative fuel types are already on the road.

The challenge of going sustainable

For many, the biggest challenge is to implement fossil-free trucks to make up the majority of their fleet in order to transform from fossil fuel-based trucking into sustainable trucking. It can be challenging to do so while also trying to ensure a profitable business model.

However, there are solutions to these challenges. Below, we have listed five important factors to consider before transitioning to a fleet of fossil-free trucks.

Five factors to consider before transitioning your fleet to fossil-free trucks

  1. Type of truck: There are many different types of technologies, e.g. biogas trucks and hybrid trucks, and every year, many new ones appear such as fully electric trucks or hydrogen trucks. Thus, it can be difficult to decide which type of truck to invest in. The type of truck you choose must correspond to the development of technologies and infrastructure.

  2. Infrastructure: The number of alternative fuel stations is still relatively low. Therefore, it is important that you consider the current and possible future infrastructure of places to fill up the tank with biogas.

  3. Range of the truck: The range of the truck varies depending on the type of alternative fuel, which is why it is important that you consider the purpose and requirements of the trucks.

  4. Service and oil change: Some alternative fuel trucks need more frequent service and oil changes compared to fossil fuel trucks, which is important to consider when choosing your investment.

  5. Fuel prices: The price of alternative fuels is high compared to fossil fuels. Therefore, it is important that you take current as well as future trends in fuel prices into consideration when choosing which type of truck to invest in.

The transformation to sustainable trucking is inevitable. But when and how you implement it will influence your supply chain, and thus it is highly important to consider all factors before you start the transformation.
